Another of LIfe’s Persistent Questions

In the car, Sunday.
Daughter: Mom, who invented the oval?

Does it say somewhere in the How to Be a Child handbook that he or she must ask lots of questions, and it’s important that some of the questions don’t have answers?

Or maybe one of you out there know.

Did someone invent the oval?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Nature. The oval is found in natural shapes such as the egg, and it is from the Latin word for egg that we have the word “oval.” No one, thus, invented it, but the geometrical shape also known as an ellipse, was first written about in 225 B.C. by Appollonius of Perga with regards to sections of a cone.

    That enough for her? 😉

Of course, in my house, when my daughter asks the “why” questions I can’t answer, I always respond, “gravity.” I once explained to her that almost anything within our known existence can be related back to gravity’s influence on us, and therefore, I’m not entirely wrong, I’m just not very detailed about the link.

Thank goodness someone who knows more than I do had the explanation that an oval is a natural shape. That’s what I thought, but “Raven’s” scientifically backed answer will be more interesting for your daughter. I would have said, “It’s a shape found in nature, so it was not ‘invented’ by any person. Rather it’s something people noticed and gave a name to, like animals. We didn’t invent a tiger, but we named it ‘tiger’.”
