police blotter

Heard on NPR this morning:

A police officer in Mason, Ohio, was alerted to possible trouble by the incessant barking of his police dog, which he had left in the cruiser while investigating a possible crime. Upon his return to his car, he found that there was a man standing outside the car, barking and hissing at the dog, provoking the animal’s response.

The man claimed that, and I believe I’m quoting here, “the dog started it.”

Now that’s mature.

The dog probably did start it, being territorial brutes. Have you ever walked too close to a car with a dog in it? They usually make an awful racket.

However, using that particular excuse to a police officer is just so dumb I don’t know what to say. “The dog ate my homework” somehow sounds brilliant compared to that.

Pretty bizarre. The dog started it, did he?

They should have arrested him on charges of stupidity and prevention of possible future crimes.
